SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS

The MAWA Doctoral Research Scholarship was established with the specific intention of encouraging new scientists to advance the development, validation and application of non-animal methods in medical research.

The MAWA Trust has been undergoing a complete restructuring during 2006: there has been a change of trustees; two new administrators have been appointed who will be based in Canberra, and additional funding is currently being negotiated.

The scope of the Trust’s work will be broadened and the management committee looks forward to implementing many of the initiatives arrived at as a result of the MAWA delegates’ participation at the 5th World Congress on Alternatives in Berlin last year.

New proposals will be phased in as funding becomes available and include:

  • The appointment of a Research Assistant who will develop, expand and oversee the scientific aspects of MAWA;
  • The award of:
    • Honours Scholarships;
    • Conference Scholarships;
    • Travelling Scholarships;
  • Grants-in-Aid;
  • Support for tissue banks ;
  • Establishment of a loan system of alternative teaching systems;
  • Donation of resources for alternative teaching systems.

As a result of the restructure and relocation of The MAWA Trust the MAWA Doctoral Research Scholarship will not be offered until 2008 with a
closing date for applications of 31 October 2007.

The recipient of the Scholarship will receive an annual stipend of $22,500 and approved expenses up to $2,500 each year for three years in the pursuit of a research program leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Funding will not be made available simply in support of non-animal research per se. Award of the Scholarship is contingent upon the proposed research program being consistent with the stated aims of the Trust.
